Fragrance-Free – Offenders and Alternatives

ei thrive categorizes products containing fragrance from most offensive to least offensive based on the level of impact to health for those with chemical sensitivities.  When implementing a fragrance-free environment, we encourage those participating to minimize the use of products containing fragrance in priority from most offensive to least offensive.

Most Offensive Products Containing Fragrance 
These are identified as products containing particles that disseminate throughout the air, may enter HVAC systems and attach to other individuals’ clothing.  These include:

  • Air Fresheners (Spray, Plug-ins, etc.)
  • Scented Candles

Highly Offensive Products Containing Fragrance 
These are identified as products containing particles that disseminate throughout the air, may enter HVAC systems and often attach to other individuals’ clothing.  These include:

  • Body Spray
  • Cologne
  • Perfume
  • Scented after-shave lotions
  • Scented body/hand lotions
  • Scented hand sanitizer

thriver tip: When shopping for lotions, look for products labeled “fragrance free”.  Often products labeled “for sensitive skin” are free of fragrance.

Moderately Offensive Products Containing Fragrance 
These are identified as products containing particles that disseminate within the vicinity of the individual wearing them and may attach to other individuals’ clothing.  These include:

  • Scented dryer sheets
  • Scented laundry detergents
  • Scented fabric softeners

Least Offensive Products Containing Fragrance 
These are identified as products containing particles that generally stay within arms length of the individual wearing them.  These include:

  • Scented deodorants
  • Scented hair care (shampoo and conditioners)
  • Scented soaps
