Shopping for Safer Products

One of the most common questions we receive is “I use XYZ personal care product.  Is there a better alternative?”  Luckily, there are some great websites and organizations available to help – including us!

Helpful Tips When Shopping for Fragrance-Free Products

  • Read labels. Look for “fragrance-free” or “perfume or dye-free”. Avoid products with fragrance in the ingredient list.
  • Note that “unscented” is not the same as fragrance-free. Unscented products may have a masking fragrance. Check the ingredient list to see if fragrance is listed.
  • Products that say “for sensitive skin” are likely to be fragrance free.

Easy to Use Resources to Help When Shopping for Safer Products

ei thrive’s list of Shop Clean Apps is an easy to read summary of apps to identify less toxic goods while you shop.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) provides a wealth of information empowering consumers to make safer and more informed decisions about the products they buy.  EWG has a searchable database of cleaning products, cosmetics and food. Each product gets is scored and displays a list of problem ingredients or issues that contribute to the score. We sometimes hear this website can be difficult to maneuver when looking for a specific product, such as laundry detergent.  We’ve found this works well – conduct a web search by typing what you are looking for followed by “ewg”.  For example, type “laundry detergent ewg” in Google.  Download their App for either the iPhone or Android for quick reference while you shop.

The GoodGuide scientifically ranks products and companies based on their environmental, health and social performance to help consumers make informed purchasing decisions.  Visit their website or download their App for either the iPhone or Android for quick reference while you shop.

Looking for something more specific to cosmetics?  The ThinkDirty folks have a nice App focused on educating consumers on ingredients in the cosmetic industry so you can make better choices.

Our friends at the Environmental Health Association of Nova Scotia can help identify less toxic alternatives for personal care, household cleaning, baby care, and household pest control.

Of course, we are available as a resource to you!  Totally lost and don’t know what product to use?  Can’t find an alternative to your favorite shampoo or other personal care product?  Just contact us.  We exist to help!
